Kottai Karanthai is a plant of Karanthai family usually grows in crops fields and in barren lands of South India. Its flowers are collected, dried well and ground into very fine powder. It is being used by our people since ancient days. Karanthai is classified into many types as Siva karanthai, Kottai Karanthai, Vishnu Karanthai, Surya Karanthai, Kuthu Karanthai and so on.

It is called as Indian Globe Thistle, Kakronda, Mundi, Boda Taramu, Karantagida, Minanganni. Its Botanical Name is Sphoeranthus Hirtus.
